In the 500S, Gateway combines a reasonably nice-looking system and a good software bundle with, unfortunately, unremarkable hardware that yielded below-average performance. The system is built around a 1.8-GHz P4 with an integrated Intel 845GL graphics chip set, but what hurts it is its small, 5,400-rpm, 20GB hard drive—especially noticeable when paired with the robust multimedia software. The matte gray-and-silver midtower case has a top-hinged flap that flips down to cover the drives and leave a smooth front, revealing only the power button and the Gateway logo. The system has a CD-RW drive and DVD drive, but no FireWire ports. The software bundle includes Microsoft Works Suite 2002 (Word, PictureIt!, Encarta, Money, and Streets & Trips).
