Holdsworth Frame Serial Numbers
BSA used a system of letters and numbers for yearly identification of their machines. Before you proceed be sure to read the introduction page. I took the stripped down frame to Mark Beaver of Cyclesmith and Tamarack Cycles, Halifax, NS in order to get bottle bosses and other parts brazed on. When he removed the bottom bracket a dirty oil stained piece of paper was found protruding from the lower part of the seat tube. I never knew what year, model or color the original frame was. The document is signed by someone from Holdsworth - perhaps the builder or foreman? If you look carefully you can see the model name in red ink to the right of the word 'transfers'.
This was a 'eureka' moment! The Holdsworth is a Typhoon. The serial number on the document is as stamped on the frame and the date recorded in upper right corner is 26 April 1965. From Kilgariff's site (www.nkilgariff.com/) I would deduce that 1965 was the first year for production of this style of Typhoon. He does not have a catalog for 1965 so this document is very helpful. According to the document the enamelling was 'blue steel lustre' and in fact if you look carefully I believe there is some of the original paint splattered just above the heading 'transfers'. I can only wonder how my 1965 Holdsworth Typhoon was built up when purchased by the first owner.
